Mixing pieced with applique is interesting … though I don’t think I will ever try doing it, unless I make a really boring Log Cabin quilt top, and add some applique to brighten it up.
I like the design above …
… and love the next one.
The fourth one is nice, and leaves room for some quilting playtime.
The last one makes more use of the Log Cabin blocks with the darker contrast in use.
The first design could be made as just a Log Cabin quilt, but with a lot of washed out colours in the light part of the Courthouse Steps blocks and a lot of all light blocks it makes a great background for some applique.
The second design would work with plain background applique blocks surrounded by all dark Log Cabin blocks.
I love the design above … most of the Log blocks are Courthouse Steps, with four Curved Logs in the corners.
Looks like a secret garden hidden behind some shrubs.
Love the applique border in the second design, but a bit disappointed as I hoped that the soft colours of the Log Cabin blocks in the background would be more effective.
Like the extra flowers in the centre.
Now the Log Cabin part of the quilt is demanding attention! That’s more like what I was hoping for.
I think I will have some fun mixing up the formal garden with a heap of logs!
